Beginning Anew On The Beach At Dawn

by peterliu47 on April 2, 2010

Malama Maui campaign by the Maui Visitors BureauI am not an overly spiritual person by nature, but every so often I am touched by an extraordinary event. The huiwai ritual at DT Fleming Beach this morning was one of those.

The ritual was a symbolic cleansing of body and soul, allowing everyone a “fresh start” as we marked the beginning of the 18th annual Celebration of the Arts at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua today.

A large group of us made our way down to the beach at the crack of dawn and crowded around as Charles Kaupu and Clifford Naeʻole led a short prayer, then we all plunged into the surf for a swim. Afterwards, we gathered in a circle and were led in Hawaiian chants as we watched the sun come up over the horizon. It was a deeply moving experience.

The resort is built around ancient Hawaiian burial grounds, and the Ceremony of the Arts is about paying homage to these ancestors, honoring them by showcasing cultural practices passed down through the generations. It’s a great opportunity to learn about and appreciate the deep cultural roots of the islands, and to see a side of Hawaiʻi not usually seen by tourists.

Here are links to two videos I live streamed – we were granted special permission for the first time ever to record part of this ceremony.

Remarks and prayers before the swimming ritual.
Anticipation in the pre-dawn darkness
Chanting after the swim, awaiting sunrise.
