The Fall season officially began yesterday which tells me my favorite event of the year is right around the corner. E kipa mai…welcome to the 88th Maui County Fair! Themed “Celebrating Community,” the Fair will be held Thursday, September 30 through Sunday, October 3. The highly anticipated event brings the entire community together to enjoy an alcohol-free, smoke-free and drug-free family-oriented educational extravaganza with plenty of entertainment, ono local grinds, and loads of fun for the entire ohana.
The Maui County Fair Parade (the largest parade on The Valley Isle) Kicks-off the four-day Extravaganza
The four-day event is expected to draw nearly 100,000 attendees. It kicks-off with a parade (the largest on Maui) and highlights include poultry and livestock exhibits, arts & crafts, a chili cook-off, photo contests, Joy Zone (rides), Bonsai exhibits, Keiki ID Booth, a “Better Living” tent featuring local products and services, and so much more.
The Horticulture Section Provides Excellent Displays of the Produce and Flowers Grown Across Maui Nui
The Maui County Fair is also well-known for its exceptional line-up of entertaintment. Year after year, I am blown away by calabre of talented singers, musicians, dancers and more. This year will not disappoint. Some of the featured acts include Makaha Sons, Weldon Kekauoha, Uluwehi Guererro, A Touch of Gold, Roddy Lopez and hypnotist James Kellog, Jr.
The very best part of the Maui County Fair? Hands down…it’s all about the food! Nothing showcases Maui’s melting pot better than the vast array of dishes which celebrate our many cultures. Try the Korean Kalbi Ribs, Portuguese Malasadas or the Puerto Rican Pasteles. How about Filipino Pansit noodles, Japanese Teriyaki Beef or the Hawaiian Plate? There is smorgasbord of choices to please any and every palate. And yes, you can even count on good ‘ole hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza as well. The food booths are all manned and operated by non-profit organizations and therefore an opportunity to satisfy your hunger and support a good cause at the same time.
While the Fair is primarily a “local” event, I always encourage visitors to “mix it up” by venturing into our small towns and attending community events to mingle with Mauians. The Maui County Fair is perhaps the best opportunity of the entire year.
